Bio:

Rebecca Helms, PT, DPT, WCC, is an Assistant Professor and Director of Clinical Education in the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program. She primarily teaches in the integumentary curriculum and clinical education coursework, with additional involvement in acute care–related content. Her research interests include wound assessment methods and clinical education models that enhance student preparedness and clinical training outcomes. Dr. Helms’s current scholarly work examines the consistency of wound measurement techniques across healthcare disciplines and the relationship between strength, trunk rotation, and club head speed in golfers. Her areas of expertise include wound care, acute care physical therapy, and clinical education.

Dr. Helms has been a physical therapist since 2007. She has worked in acute care and long-term acute care hospital settings. She continues to maintain active clinical practice, providing specialized wound care services and management for medically complex patient populations. She actively collaborates with clinical partners to enhance the quality of clinical education and to support mentorship initiatives for students and clinical instructors. Dr. Helms is an active member of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) and the Carolina Clinical Education Consortium, where she serves as the secretary.

Dr. Helms received her BS in Exercise Science, with a minor in Coaching, and her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Gannon University. Dr. Helms holds the following certifications and credentials: Wound Care Certified from the National Alliance of Wound Care and Ostomy, and Credentialed Clinical Instructor from the APTA.
