“Stand fast in the faith; love one another.”
– St. Perpetua (AD 181 – AD 203)
Revelation 2:10 encourages us not to be afraid, even though we may endure suffering and tribulations. Scripture tells us that some will be imprisoned and tested, but we are called to remain faithful, for faithfulness leads to receiving a “crown.” As humans, we plan our days and our futures, and when events go wrong, we reschedule — another time, another day, another venue. But when the plan we had for our life goes awry, we often feel devastated, lost, uncertain about what happened, and unsure of the next step. We begin questioning every detail. Did I do this? Did I forget that? What went wrong? Was something missed? Why did this happen? Sometimes the answers never come.
In life, we will all face trials, tribulations, and suffering. At times we ask ourselves, “Am I the only one going through this?” The answer is ‘no.’ Our brothers and sisters in Christ also endure difficulties that test our faith and beliefs. During these seasons, we are reminded to remain steadfast, for “faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1). Sometimes, faith is the only hope we have to endure our anguish.
We must also remember that Christ Himself endured suffering beyond anything we may fully comprehend. As His followers, we are called to remain faithful and love one another.
I have often heard it said that “the Lord will not put more on our plate than we can handle.” And yet there have been times I have said, “Lord, you have changed my plate into a platter, and it is overflowing!” Even with the increased platter’s-worth God has entrusted to me, I return to the encouragement found in Revelation 2:10 and cling to my faith with determination. I remind myself to remain faithful, carry the load Christ intends me to carry, stand tall, and persevere to receive the “crown of life.”
Receiving the “crown of life” is the blessing of God’s favor, faithfulness, and identity in Christ. Though life brings trials and tribulations, remembering the suffering Christ endured reminds us that we, as His people, can love one another and remain faithful. With faith and perseverance, we can endure all that is placed before us—even when it feels too much to bear. Then one day, we will lift our heads, receive our reward, and wear our crown with gratitude and faith.
Prayer: Lord, strengthen us when the journey feels heavy, and remind us that You walk beside us in every trial and triumph. Help us remain faithful so that our lives reflect Your love, and may we live with hope until the day we receive the crown You have promised. Amen.
