“He took our nature, not our guilt.”
– Leo the Great (AD 461 – AD 688)
Leo the Great was quoted as saying that “He took our nature, not our guilt.” In Romans 8:3-4, scripture reminds us that we are all condemned by sin and unable to change our human weakness by our own strength. We are flawed by our sins for things we did and also things we should have done. Thus, we are unable to change ourselves and our sinful nature without a renewal of commitment, repentance, and dedication to God our Father, and His Son, Jesus Christ.
The symbol utilized by Leo the Great was a set of scales with represented mercy and justice. In law, we focus on truth and justice. Various procedures and required practices are used to determine the facts of a case for consideration of the judge or jury. The focus is a search for truth.
We recognize that the power of law is limited. However, the power of God and the Holy Spirt is unlimited. The Heavenly Father is all powerful and all knowing. He is kind, loving, and merciful.
We look forward to Advent as a time of renewal, rejoicing and communion. No greater gift has been given to mankind than the Father’s grace and forgiveness.
Thus, Our Father sent his Son as an innocent babe into the world, not to condemn the world – but that through Him, all of the world might be saved. This mission statement is still the same today as it was yesterday and will continue into the future.
Prayer: Lord, in Your mercy, remind us that although we are weakened by sin, we are never beyond the reach of Your grace, forgiveness, and renewal. As we enter this season of Advent, help us receive Your truth with humility and Your love with gratitude, trusting fully in the saving work of Christ our Redeemer. Amen.
