“Wake up, O human! For your God became human for you.”

—Augustine of Hippo (AD 354 – AD 430)

The time has already come to wake up from your slumber. When we lack regular communication with a friend, it is easy to miss the little occurrences of the day, and before we know it, we are absent from our friend’s life. It is the same with Christ; when we step out of sequence and are no longer pursuing the “friendship” or relationship, it is easy to become disconnected or fall into a spiritual slumber.

According to Webster’s Dictionary, complacency is a self-satisfaction, especially when accompanied by unawareness of actual dangers or deficiencies. Spiritual complacency is easy to fall into when the time we spend in our relationship with Christ has worn thin or when we have failed to maintain that connection. Work, studying, athletics, and social commitments each challenge our time, and it is easy to think I will “make it up” and have more connection tomorrow.

Unfortunately, without daily interaction, our ears, heart, or mind are not being pricked and challenged to correct sinful behavior, reverse a downward trend, or be more like Christ.

Moreover, we aren’t receiving the peace and comfort of the One who loved us so much that He died for us (literally).

When the world around us is becoming increasingly evil, it can be difficult to be different, or stand affirmed in our difference. However, when we are equipped daily with the belt of truth, prayer, and the breastplate of righteousness, it is easier to be the light of the world. Christ is returning soon; we do not know the day, the hour, or the minute – but He has called us to be ready (Matt 24:26).

Prayer: Lord, awaken our hearts and stir our spirits so that we do not drift into complacency but remain alert, connected, and faithful to Your calling. Strengthen us daily with Your truth, Your righteousness, and Your presence so we may walk as Your light in a darkened world. Amen.
