“Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.”
– St. Jerome (unknown – AD 420)
What does the saying “Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ” mean? To begin understanding this phrase, it helps to remember that ignorance simply means “a lack of knowledge.” Some view a lack of knowledge as a negative thing, but to someone committed to growing, ignorance becomes an invitation, a tool for learning. As human beings, we are continually learning. When we discover an area where we are uninformed, we are given an opportunity to grow.
King Solomon, the wisest man to walk the earth, understood this well. He knew that to rule his fairly given, God-given kingdom wisely, he needed understanding. So, faced with God’s invitation to him to ask for whatever he desired, Solomon responded: “Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this your great people?”
(1 Kings 3:9 ESV)
Just as Solomon asked for wisdom, we too are called to seek understanding—especially when it comes to Scripture. Scripture teaches us who Christ is and why He came. Romans 15:4 reminds us: “For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide, we might have hope.”
A lack of Scriptural knowledge inevitably leads to a misunderstanding of Christ — His nature, His mission, and His love for us. Scripture was given so that we would have hope when trials arise. Through reading and reflecting on the Word, we learn that Christ is our Hope — the One who came so that we might have life and have it abundantly (Psalm 33:20–22; John 10:10).
To truly know, understand, and trust Christ as our Hope, we must study Scripture and recognize its purpose: to lay a foundation for understanding who Christ is and what He came to do. Through Scripture, we are led into deeper faith, deeper truth, and deeper trust.
Prayer: Lord, open our hearts and minds to Your Word, that we may know Christ more fully and trust Him more deeply. Guide us as we seek wisdom, and let Your truth shape our faith, our choices, and our lives. Amen.
