“You have made us for yourself, and our heart is restless until it rests in you”
— Augustine of Hippo (AD 354- AD 430)
We spend our days trying to have and do it all. We strive to make sure we haven’t forgotten something or someone amid our obligations and commitments. Most often, it is our own well-being that we overlook. This oversight becomes more of an issue for me this time of year when the thoughts of planning holiday meals and gifts, and reflecting on unaccomplished goals, meet head-on with shorter days and colder temperatures. I can quickly become overwhelmed, feel depressed, or begin to get sick. I forget to take time to rest and allow full restoration of mind, body, and soul.
I may let my earthly titles or roles overshadow who I was created to be. I miss the small things and the beautiful moments. I forget the “reason for the season,” and restlessness disrupts my whole being. Then I remember: I don’t have to do it all. I am at my strongest when I ask for help and when I trust in God.
I’ve never lost a friend or family member because I made one less dessert or wrapped a handmade gift with irregular stitching in the same paper from the last two years. Things that need to happen will happen, even when I’m not on every committee. I cannot get back moments with my family and friends. I jeopardize my own peace when I allow myself to become overwhelmed.
Take time this season and throughout the year to rest and restore your soul. Begin each day with prayer and reflection. Make time to just be. Be present. Be joyful. Be light and love. Listen to your body, mind, and soul. Rest in the arms of our loving Father.
Prayer: Lord, teach us to rest in You and to let go of everything we are holding too tightly. Help us slow down, breathe deeply, and trust that Your love is enough. Amen.
