King greets alumni at Homecoming

Methodist University will celebrate Homecoming and Family Weekend on Oct. 16-17. The celebration will include athletic events, alumni reunions, awards ceremonies and events for families.

Friday, Oct. 16

The 18th Annual Hall of Fame Banquet will be held Friday night, sponsored by the Monarch Booster Club. Celebrate the accomplishments of past Monarch athletes, coaches and “Teams of Distinction.” The banquet will take place at Berns Student Center at 6:30 p.m.

A Homecoming Bonfire and Pep Rally will begin on campus, behind the Riddle Center, at 9 p.m.

Saturday, Oct. 17

The MU Alumni Association Awards Ceremony will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Alumni Dining Room. Awards will honor the following:

  • Howard Arden ’70 – Distinguished Alumni
  • Wesley Mensing ’09 – Distinguished Young Alumni
  • Sandy Combs – Outstanding Faculty/Staff
  • Rev. Woodrow Wells ’69 – Outstanding Alumni Service
  • Mary and Harvey Wright ’68, ’70 – Philanthropist Award.

Of special note is the Distinguished Young Alumni Award presented posthumously to Wesley Mensing ’09 and accepted by his parents Carol and Bob Mensing. Mensing died tragically in New York City this past January. A Methodist University PGA Golf Management graduate, he had become a standout golf pro and master instructor at top resorts in the country. When he was at Methodist University, Mensing restarted the MU mission experience and served as captain of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. A ceremonial tee shot will be held at 9 a.m. in his honor by his family members, alumni friends, faculty, coaches, and staff at the MU golf course “Downback.”

Following the awards ceremony, a tailgate and food truck luncheon and KidsZone will be held between the Berns Student Center and the March Riddle Center.

The Homecoming football game begins at 1 p.m. Saturday as the Monarchs take on N.C. Wesleyan. Other athletic events on Saturday include women’s soccer at 2 p.m.
