If you’ve never seen one of Methodist University’s fabulous musicals, now is the perfect time. The MU Department of Performing Arts will stream the musical comedy “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change” by Joe Di Pietro and Jimmy Roberts on March 18-20 at 7:30 p.m. and March 21 at 2 p.m.

“I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change” is a musical revue about our need for relationships, from the foolishness of self-promotion in dating, to the fracas and calm of marriage,” said Dr. Evan Bridenstine, professor of Theatre at MU.

“At the heart of the show is our need for each other, for relationships, even bad ones. Our desire to ‘fix’ someone, to find a perfect match, is part of that need,” said Bridenstine. “There’s not a single plot in the revue, no recurring characters, just an overall pattern of how relationships start, struggle, succeed or fail. Our casting creates a couple of ‘couples’ paired up in more than one scene. However, each scene is its own story. I do have my favorite scene, but I’m not going to tell!”

This is the first streamed production by the department and the new format brought on first-time challenges and with just six weeks to rehearse.

“We’ve encountered a lot of firsts,” said Bridenstine. “How to do this, or that. Just performing fully-masked was a big challenge for the cast and me. How do you show a smile without showing your mouth? Are eyes and eyebrows enough?”

Michaela Kroll, a cast member and senior Theatre major at MU said, “I have participated in many challenging shows, but almost none as challenging as taking on this musical.”

Online admission is free for MU students, faculty, and staff, and $5 for the general public. Due to language and some content, “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change” is not suitable for young audiences. Tickets can be purchased at methodistu.booktix.com.
