Methodist University served as a Presenting Sponsor at Tuesday’s Greater Fayetteville Chamber State of the Community event held at the Crown Expo Center.

MU President Stanley T. Wearden, Ph.D., was one of the featured speakers that included U.S. Senator Thom Tillis, U.S. House of Representatives Member David Rouzer, Fayetteville Mayor Mitch Colvin, and Cape Fear Valley Health CEO Mike Nagowski.
“The nation’s newest M.D. medical school is coming here, to Fayetteville,” Nagowski said of the Methodist University Cape Fear Valley Health School of Medicine, “and that’s because local entities work together to bring new programs here to Fayetteville. In addition to the obvious health benefits, the economic impact of these health programs is just off the charts.”
Wearden spoke to the founding and mission of MU, touched on its professional programs, and the University as a liberal arts institution.
“Liberal arts is about teaching people the skills and values that they need to function well in a free society,” he said. “We’re proud of that…but we’re much more than that. We also have a wide array of professional programs, and we are deeply concerned about making sure all students are able to get a job when they leave Methodist University.”
Wearden also mentioned the new medical school. “We see the school of medicine as the next logical step for us,” he said. “It has a commitment to social accountability, community engagement, and healthcare education. And we’re so proud to partner with Cape Fear Valley, as our missions correspond so well, because both of our missions are about serving the community.”
More than 600 of the chamber’s 1,000-plus members attended the annual event.
