As students at Methodist University closed out the fall semester with exams more than a week ago, the calendar will speed up soon for the women’s basketball team on campus.

Coming off their most recent game against Brevard College, the Monarchs shift their focus to a three-game stretch at home during the holiday break, offering both students who are still in town and local fans a chance to catch the team before classes begin again Jan. 5. MU will host Bethany College on Dec. 29, Bridgewater College on Dec. 31, and Pfeiffer University on Jan. 3, with all three games tipping off at 2 p.m.

While classes and final exams are in the rear view, head coach Cheryl McNair, now in her ninth season, sees this opportunity for the team to settle in and continue building chemistry both on and off the court.

“Now that the semester and final exams are over, the ladies can relax and truly enjoy being on the court and around each other,” McNair said. “We do a few team bonding events like team dinners and playing board games. The team gets along really well, but this is the time when you see their bond grow and they learn even more about themselves as players and teammates.”

The holiday break also creates a unique environment inside the March F. Riddle Center, one McNair says can play a meaningful role in the team’s energy and motivation.

“Over the years, the support for the program has grown,” McNair said. “Nobody wants to compete in an empty gym. To perform in front of your family, friends, peers, and the community gives you that extra motivation to play hard. We appreciate all who come out to watch.”

Despite graduating eight seniors from last season’s roster, McNair believes this year’s group remains grounded in the same identity that has defined the program.

“This squad may look a little different, but the goal is the same,” she said. “This talented group will compete, play defense, and play team ball.”

That foundation, McNair added, has already been tested early in the season.

“This team has had to deal with a variety of challenges already,” she said. “They’ve proven to be pretty resilient. By leaning on and supporting each other, they’ll find a way.”
