The lecture, “The NCAA; An Examination of Monopoly Power,” will feature MU faculty members Dr. Bill Kuchler, associate professor of sport management and director of the Sport Management Program, and Dr. Spence Davis, associate professor of financial economics. The two will speak on the history of the sports powerhouse and address the current issues and controversy surrounding it.
“The NCAA is genius,” Davis said. “They exercise raw monopoly power and exploit labor all under the banner of protecting the sanctity of the student-athlete.”
“We are not trying to downplay the social and psychological value gained from participation in ‘college sports,’” Kuchler added, “but, instead, we want to challenge the economic fairness of the NCAA Division I entertainment sport enterprise.”
Davis received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from New Mexico State University, and his doctorate from Colorado State University. He has been a professor at Methodist for 15 years. With strong Libertarian leanings, Davis believes strongly in freedom of choice and open and free markets.
Kuchler holds a bachelor’s degree from Carroll College, a master’s from the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee, and a doctorate from the United States Sports Academy.
