AZhimin Guans visitors make their way through the renowned David McCune International Art Gallery on the campus of Methodist University, they often stop to share with the curator of the current show “Intersection” their appreciation for the opportunity to see this level of quality. However, the opportunity doesn’t stop there.

In addition to the fall exhibition at the McCune Gallery – which runs through Dec. 1 – MU is delighted to announce Zhimin Guan, one of the featured artists in “Intersection,” will come to the campus Nov. 4-5 as part of the University’s new Visiting Artist program.

“I am very excited about the new Visiting Artist program at Methodist University,” said MU Professor of Art Vilas Tonape. “Not only will there be benefit for students of the Art programs and the MU campus in general, but also the local art community. The audience attending the presentation will get the unique opportunity to interact with a ‘practicing’ visual artist.”

Guan – a professor of Art at Minnesota State University Moorhead – is scheduled to offer a one-day workshop on Nov. 4 for MU Art majors in the Bethune Center for Visual Arts, and then offer a presentation that is open to the public on Nov. 5. The presentation will offer insight into his research, how he shifts between realism and abstraction, but also how cultural elements come in play with his 25-plus years of research in U.S. There is no charge to attend the presentation and it will be held at Clark Hall in the Yarborough Auditorium. University COVID-19 protocols (masks must be worn indoors) will be observed at all events.

“The inaugural Visiting Artist, Zhimin Guan, is an international-level artist of a top-notch caliber who has an active studio practice,” said Tonape. “It is a great educational opportunity to interact with him and learn from his studio practice.”

Guan has been featured in more than 200 professional exhibitions, including 20 solo shows. His pieces are in permanent museum collections in the U.S., China, and Singapore. As a painter, Guan strives to have an equal balance of traditional and experimental, figurative, and abstract in his art.

“I’m very excited to be a part of this exhibition ‘Intersection’ at the David McCune International Art Gallery at Methodist University,” said Guan. “I am looking forward to visiting the show.”

To secure a seat at the Guan presentation, please email Tonape at [email protected]. The “Intersection” exhibition is free, open to the public, and gallery hours are 11 a.m.-5 p.m.  Tuesday through Saturday (except on MU holidays).
