Methodist University recently received two Project Support grants from the Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County. The Council gave a $7,500 grant to the David McCune International Art Gallery to support marketing and banners for the spring’s Marc Chagall exhibit, “Chagall: The Story of Exodus.” A $2,300 grant was awarded to the Friends of Music for this year’s Guest Artist Series, which is an annual set of free elementary school workshops and evening concerts.
The Chagall exhibit, which runs Feb. 8 to April 21, is an exhibition of lithographs that tell the story of the Exodus by famed painter and illustrator Marc Chagall, a Russian-French artist of Belarusian-Jewish origin. There will be an opening reception for this exhibition on Feb. 8 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
The first Guest Artist Series performance, scheduled for Oct. 6, will be “From Church to Tango,” an educational tango history lesson with Alejandro Pinzón and featuring MU’s Dr. Keith Dippre on piano. Other events include a flute and guitar performance by Duo Cintemani on Oct. 20, classical violinist Nyamsaikhan Odsuren on Feb. 2, 2018, and baritone vocalist Jeffrey Jones with pianist Philip Powell on March 16. All of the concerts will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Hensdale Chapel. The guest musicians will also hold educational workshops for K-8 students at The Capitol Encore Academy in downtown Fayetteville.
These events would not be possible without assistance from the Arts Council.
Project Support Grants, like the ones awarded to the David McCune International Art Gallery and the Methodist University Friends of Music, aim to increase opportunities for access to arts and science, as well as cultural and historical programming in the Cumberland County area. Project Support Grants may be awarded to non-profit agencies in Cumberland County that demonstrate financial and administrative stability.
The David McCune International Art Gallery, located on the campus of Methodist University, coordinates exhibitions of art by student, regional, national, and international artists, educating students and the public through a diverse representation of fine art.
