Bio:

Andrew Treague Prieto is a Cuban-American artist and curator raised in the Southeastern U.S., currently serving as Curator of Visual Arts Exhibitions and Assistant Professor of Visual Arts at Methodist University.

Curatorial Work

As Director of the David McCune International Gallery, Prieto shapes the university’s exhibition program as a site of research, dialogue, and pedagogy. His curatorial approach is grounded in a one-on-one mentorship with Elizabeth Sussman, Chief Curator of Photography and Digital Media at the Whitney Museum of American Art, whose expertise in post-war material strategies continues to inform his curatorial framing. He also studied under renowned collaborative artist and educator Tim Rollins, whose collaborative, materials-based pedagogy with K.O.S. (Kids of Survival) informs how Prieto approaches curating as an extension of teaching — a democratizing, community- engaged practice rather than a separate discipline from the classroom.

His current curatorial project, Lady Wisdom (opening October 15, 2026), examines structural knowledge and spatial subversion through cloth, engaging the work of Anni Albers, Elizabeth Jennerjahn’s tapestry innovations, and the site-responsive crocheted environments of Sheila Pepe. The exhibition reflects Prieto’s broader curatorial and research interests in the transatlantic dialogue between textile histories — tracing lineages from Black Mountain College’s material experimentation to Arte Povera’s elevation of humble, laboring materials, and their echoes in the American South’s own textile and mill-labor traditions.

Prieto’s work has been shown nationally, including in “Abstraction at Large,” curated by Eleanor Heartney, and “Painting in the 21st Century,” curated by Stephen Henry Madoff, Art in Odd Places NYC (featuring his collaborative project TANGA!), and the Satellite Art Fair at Art Basel, Miami. His work has been featured in New American Paintings, Studio Visit Magazine, ArteFuse, Art.net, Burnaway.org, Bemoreart, and Hyperallergic among others.

Research

Prieto’s research centers on transdisciplinary practices in art, textile-based collaborative pedagogy, and the material and class histories embedded in cloth — work he develops through his ongoing project Textile Thinking, which grew out of his time as Tim Rollins’s teaching assistant at the School of Visual Arts.
