Bio:

Courtney W. Samuelson, Ph.D., is Assistant Professor of Education at Methodist University. She primarily teaches Research-Based Approaches to the Teaching of Reading, Teaching Reading Through Literature, Writing Methods for Elementary Teachers, and Foundations of Education. Dr. Samuelson is passionate about preparing pre-service teachers to engage in culturally responsive literacy instruction to support all students. Her areas of research expertise include literacy intervention, reading comprehension instruction, instructional coaching and teacher professional development, and children’s and young adult literature.

Courtney has co-authored several peer-reviewed research articles related to teachers’ knowledge for reading instruction and has been published in Reading Research Quarterly, Literacy Research and Instruction, and Reading & Writing Quarterly: Overcoming Learning Difficulties. She is a professional member of and volunteer for the Literacy Research Association and serves as a reviewer for several journals, including Fringes: The North Carolina English Teachers’ Association Journal.

Courtney earned her Bachelor of Arts in English and Linguistics from UNC-Chapel Hill, her Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from N.C. State University, and a Ph.D. in Teacher Education and Learning Sciences from N.C. State. Previously, she served as an educator for ten years in North Carolina public schools in various roles, including as an elementary school teacher, middle grades ELA teacher, interventionist, and instructional coach.
