Weekly mentoring program in which MU students are paired with boys and girls at MWES through a joint outreach program in partnership with Hay Street United Methodist Church.

Oversight and distributions from The Lion’s Share Food Pantry, providing canned food and toiletries to the campus community through regular hours of operation.

Food Drive to restock The Lion’s Share Food Pantry, which provides canned food and necessary toiletries to the campus community.

Voter Registration
Cumberland County Voter registration event to increase voter turnout among college students.

Rise Against Hunger
Freshman Monarchs, faculty, and staff packed over 50,000 meals in two hours to continue efforts to end world hunger. This included on-site training of Methodist University’s Community Engagement Fellows at the Rise Against Hunger Regional Office.

Hurricane Florence Relief

  • Flood Buckets – Alumni, students, faculty and staff sponsored and packed flood buckets for immediate distribution in the Fayetteville area.
  • UMCOR Disaster Relief – Students, faculty and staff completed group work days in partnership with UMCOR Disaster Relief, clearing debris and providing relief services in the first month after Hurricane Florence.

Soles4Souls Shoe Drive
Students collected gently-used footwear for distribution through a mission in Guatemala.

Show You Care Day
Student, faculty, and staff volunteers completed various projects to beautify our campus and upgrade facilities.


Summer 2018

Shelton Camp
Participants in the General Shelton Leadership Camp partnered with Methodist University’s Center for Community Engagement to complete general landscaping and beautification projects in the local area.

Second Harvest Food Distribution
The Center for Community Engagement partners with the Lector Club (Honors Program Club) and community agency, Second Harvest Food Bank, to add breads to periodic distribution and sets up second distribution site on campus.

Day of Service for New Student Orientation
The Class of 2021 packed over 52,000 meals in two hours as a part of New Student Orientation. These meals were shipped all over the world as part of Rise Against Hunger.

Hurricane Harvey Relief
Campus-wide effort in response to Hurricane Harvey survivors, in which students collected items for and packed over 100 health kits, sending them to the hometown of MU Freshman student whose family was in the affected area.

Power Up Puerto Rico
Campus-wide collection of batteries in support of survivors after Hurricane Maria left 88% of the island (about 3 million people) without power.

“Santa Paws” Angel Tree Project
Residence Halls across the Housing program at MU sponsored trees in Residence Hall lobbies to benefit children and families at Margaret Willis Elementary School. Over 168 gifts were collected.

In response to a food insecurity survey by students, The Lion’s Share Food Pantry opens, providing canned food and toiletries to the campus community through regular hours of operation.


Fall 2016

Day of Service for New Student Orientation
The Class of 2020 packed over 101,000 meals in 4 hours as a part of New Student Orientation. These meals were shipped all over the world as a part of the Stop Hunger Now effort.

Initiatives in response to Hurricane Matthew Relief

  • Flood Buckets – Alumni, students, faculty and staff in partnership with local community groups, sponsored and packed 100 flood buckets ($65 value/each) for immediate distribution in the Fayetteville area.
  • UMCOR Disaster Relief – Students, faculty and staff completed three group work days in partnership with UMCOR Disaster Relief, mucking out homes and providing relief services in the first 3 weeks after Hurricane Matthew.
  • Thanksgiving Meal for First Responders – Students prepared and delivered 120 meals to first responders throughout Cumberland County in gratitude for their service after Hurricane Matthew.
  • “Flood Them with Love” Angel Tree Project – Annual Angel Tree project was expanded to respond to children displaced by Hurricane Matthew. Over 500 gifts of basic need items were collected including over 120 provided by the MU Maintenance and Grounds staff.
  • Cape Fear Botanical Gardens Mentor & Family Outing – Students (and families) displaced by Hurricane Matthew and in the mentoring program were paired with MU Students and members of Hay Street UMC for a special holiday lights experience at Cape Fear Botanical Gardens.

Summer 2016

Nursing/PA students at North Carolina Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church
MU Nursing and PA students offered health screenings and BP checks to over 1,000 delegates to the Annual Conference resulting in two delegates’ being alerted to serious health issues that might have otherwise gone undetected.

Shelton Camp
Participants in the General Shelton Leadership Camp partner with Methodist University’s Center for Community Engagement to serve in home/yard maintenance in the greater Fayetteville area.

Fayetteville Urban Ministries
Students participated as servers in a fundraiser luncheon for community partner, Fayetteville Urban Ministries

Mentor Day
Students and Staff participated in visiting Fort Bragg area schools to provide information on college and careers to Middle School students

Freshmen Day of Service
Students served in 26 agencies across Cumberland County and in the greater Fayetteville community as part of the Freshman Day of Service

Winter Wonderland
Students hosted over 100 elementary and middle school students from Cumberland County public schools, along with their parents, for holiday crafts, entertainment, and angel tree gift exchange. This year’s event focused on serving students with Native American heritage.
