Next Tuesday, March 5, the collection of local musicians and Methodist University students will be teaming up for their third concert of the 2023-24 academic year. The event is set for 7:30 p.m. at Huff Concert Hall in the Reeves Fines Arts Complex and is free and open to the public.

Fayetteville Symphonic Band/MU Concert BandThe upcoming concert, “Year of the Dragon” by Philip Sparke, will showcase musical works inspired by the Chinese New Year.

“The program happens to coincide with the current Chinese zodiac year,” said Dr. Daniel McCloud, MU’s associate professor of Music. “Other familiar works on the program include variations on a ‘Korean Folk Song’ by John Barnes Chance and highlights from the popular animated movie series ‘How to Train Your Dragon’.”

The musicians will also be joined by young performers from the Chinese Immersion Program at New Century International Elementary School, who will be sharing a traditional dance during the event.

One of the Methodist University students, freshman Charmaine Robison, is set to play the percussion, chimes, tambourine, wood block, and cymbals during next week’s performance.

“It’s an honor to be a part of something so beautiful,” said Robison, a Music Performance major. “Being around people who share the same passion as you is heartwarming. I love learning from others who’ve been doing this longer than I have.”

The Fayetteville Symphonic Band and MU Concert Band have two more concerts lined up for the remaining year:

  • April 23, 2024: Bandancing! (7:30 p.m. at Huff Concert Hall)
  • July 4, 2024: July 4th (TBD at Festival Park)
