Which ENG 1010 Course Should I Take?

A core part of your first semester at Methodist will be taking a first-year writing course (ENG 1010: Composition), which will help you develop the advanced reading, writing, and critical thinking skills you’ll need to succeed in your other courses at MU.

When you select courses for your class schedule, you will have the option of enrolling in EITHER a regular section of ENG 1010 OR a special section called ENG 1010 WL. The courses are the same except that ENG 1010 WL provides additional support in the Writing Center, where you will spend one hour a week working with a designated writing tutor.

To help you decide whether you want to take ENG 1010 or ENG 1010 WL, you will complete a directed self-placement (DSP) survey as part of the admissions process. This short survey (about five minutes to complete) will help you decide whether or not enrolling in an ENG 1010 WL section might be a good fit for you. Based on your responses, the survey will either RECOMMEND or NOT RECOMMEND you enroll in ENG 1010 WL instead of enrolling in a regular section of ENG 1010.

Once you complete the survey, you will receive an email with your results, which you should discuss with your advisor. They will help you consider whether you should enroll in ENG 1010 WL or in a regular section of ENG 1010. Either way, you get to choose.

If you have questions about the DSP survey or ENG 1010 WL, please contact the Writing Program Administrator, Victoria Houser below.
