Methodist University’s Spring Semester 2023 officially got underway on Monday (Jan. 9), and it’s a great time for new and returning Monarchs to look forward at the exciting things to come.

Friends of Music Series (Feb. 10 & March 24)

Yolanda Rabun and Liz BroscoeThe “Friends of Music Guest Artist Series” provides live classical and contemporary musical demonstrations on campus. February will host Yolanda Rabun (left), a North Carolina-based singer who performs and records across genres in jazz, soul, R & B, gospel, folk and contemporary music. In March, Liz Broscoe will perform drums with a specialization in West African djembe and dunun drums. 

Play4Kay Women’s Basketball Game and 5K Run/Walk (Feb. 11)

Each year, MU is proud to host Play4Kay events aimed at raising money for fighting various forms of women’s cancer. The day will kick off with a Play4Kay 5K Run/Walk on the University’s campus followed by a women’s basketball game and silent auction at the March F. Riddle Center. Proceeds go to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation: Friends of the Cancer Center.

One Stop Career Fairs (Feb. 15 & 23)

MU’s One Stop will host two career fairs, the first on Feb. 15 at North Carolina State University and the second on Feb. 23 at Methodist University. In partnership with NCWorks, the career fairs will allow current students and alumni to connect with community partners and other alumni for various career openings. Lunch and Learn (February 15, March 29, April 19)

To help cultivate a climate of belonging and inclusion, the University and its Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion will be hosting three “Lunch and Learn” gatherings with students, faculty and staff this semester. In February, the MU community will discuss what Black History Month means to them. March will feature a conversation about black women in rap for Women’s History Month. Then, in April, the University will host a dialog titled “Let’s Be Blunt”, focusing on systemic racism surrounding marijuana and its legalization.

MU Theatre Presents “The Marvelous Wonderettes” (Feb. 23-26)

Written and created by Roger Bean, MU’s Theatre program will perform the jukebox musical comedy, “The Marvelous Wonderettes,” over a four-day stretch at Huff Concert Hall. General admission is $5 and free to MU students, faculty and staff with an ID.

Pangea (March 23)

A spirit-filled night showcasing a range of talents, Pangea enters the spotlight at Huff Concert Hall on March 23, sponsored by the MU Global Education Office. Dozens of Methodist University’s international students perform various acts with ties to their home country. The event even features a crowd favorite — an international fashion show.

Holy Week (April 3-9)

During Holy Week, Methodist University Religious Life hosts six events on campus to help Christians recall the events leading up to Jesus’ death by crucifixion and resurrection. “A Service of Palms” commemorates Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem to observe Passover. The week concludes with Good Friday and a day of silence leading to the Easter vigil and Easter sunrise observance.

CRC Symposium (April 10-14)

The University’s 12th annual Center for Research and Creativity Symposium will feature ideas, conversation, questions and more for a full week on campus. On Symposium Day, April 12, a few dozen MU students will deliver presentation on a variety of engaging topics. Another marquee event during the week will be the 26th annual B.F. Stone Lyceum, a well-respected lecture series. 

Spring Fling (April 26)

Students at Spring FlingStudents will want to keep a close eye on this one. The MU Campus Engagement Office’s annual Spring Fling features an afternoon filled with plenty of games, activities, food trucks, and more.

Baccalaureate & Commencement (May 5 & 6)

They are the moments every student, parent and faculty member look forward to: Baccalaureate and Spring Commencement. On Friday, May 5, the Baccalaureate service recognizes the accomplishments of the graduates followed by a service featuring student-led messages and music. Then, during the Spring Commencement on Saturday, May 6, graduates will receive their well-deserved diplomas in front of their loved ones.
